I am curious what your experience has been with finding big surprises - i.e. plumbing, electrical, structural, etc. Do you have them thoroughly inspected by your own people/contractors? Do you only buy a certain age of house?

  • On my rentals I tend to buy houses newer than 1960 in most cases. I still run into surprises, but I try to get good enough deals that those surprises aren't deal killers. I can usually get a good idea of what the plumbing and electrical is like myself with a visual inspection. If I am worried about something I will have an expert check it out.
